Sunday Recap of Transactions

Posted by Brad On July – 31 – 2011

The entire day for me was wrapped up at Cleveland Browns training camp and away from the computer and cell phone.  It was nice to catch up with some old faces in the Browns organization but the day away was busy in the NFL world.  Here’s a list of what we missed:

The Washington Redskins and T Jamaal Brown agreed to a 5-year contract.

Deuce Lutui showed up to his Cincinnati Bengal physical overweight and was promptly sent packing back to Arizona.  Lutui’s weight has been an issue in the past as he has topped the scales at near 400 lbs in the past.

Tim Hightower was sent to the Washington Redskins for a conditional pick and Vonnie Holliday.  Hightower could start in Washington and appears to be a good fit in Shanahan’s running game.

John Kuhn signed a 3-year deal to stay with the Packers.  Packer fans will be happy as he’s a favorite of the Pack.

Fresh off an assault charge Cedric Benson re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Justin Blalock agreed to a 6-year deal to stay with the Atlanta Falcons

The Detroit Lions were able to retain the services of Chris Houston on a 2-year deal.

The Chicago Bears will not be able to retain Olin Kreutz so they signed C Chris Spencer to a 2-year deal.

Nick Barnett agreed to a 3-year, $12 million deal, $6 million guaranteed with the Buffalo Bills.  He will replace Paul Posluszny at MLB who was lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier in free agency.

Daniel Graham will join the Tennessee Titans on a 3-year deal.

Aaron Rodgers made a public plea for the Packers to keep James Jones and today they listened.  Jones agreed to a 3-year deal to stay with the Packers.

Vonta Leach and the Baltimore Ravens agreed to 3-year, $11 million deal with $6 million guaranteed.

The New Orleans Saints agreed to a 1-year deal with CB Fabian Washington

Barrett Ruud Joins the Titans

Posted by Brad On July – 31 – 2011

"Barrett Ruud signs with the Titans"The Tennessee Titans have made it clear that Stephen Tulloch will not be back in Tennessee with the signing of Barrett Ruud.

The Titans have agreed to terms with former Tampa Bay Buccaneer MLB, Barrett Ruud on a 1-year deal (terms undisclosed).  Ruud is a smart football player that excels in coverage but lacks the physicality that most want to see in a MLB.  Ruud will give the Titans what they lacked with Stephen Tulloch; a player that can drop deep middle and cover backs out the backfield.  Ruud is an instinctive linebacker that is an excellent leader of the defense and will get players into the right spots.

Ruud has amassed 585 tackles, 5 sacks, and 6 INT’s in his 6 year career with the Bucs.  Ruud should fit nicely in Jerry Gray’s defensive scheme that will feature a two-gap DL with LB’s called to play more read-and-react.  This scheme would seem to fit Ruud and he will serve as a mentor to a couple of young LB’s.

Ruud will battle with Rennie Curran and rookie Colin McCarthy for the starting MLB spot.

Hasselbeck to Tennessee to Serve as a Mentor to Locker

Posted by Brad On July – 27 – 2011

What Mike Munchak wants; he gets.  Munchak had said all along that he wanted to bring a veteran QB that could mentor and compete with rookie Jake Locker.  It appears that mentor will come in the form of Matt Hasselbeck.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Tennessee Titans have come to terms with veteran QB Matt Hasselbeck on a multi-year deal.  Hasselbeck has amassed just shy of 30,000 yards and 176 TD’s in his career.

With the amount of teams searching for a veteran QB this has to be viewed as a win for the Titans.  Unless he gets Jake Delhomme money at which point we may retract that statement.

Now that the Titans have found their QB it’s time to restructure Chris Johnson’s ridiculous contract.
