Chargers Pay Up to Keep Weddle

Posted by Brad On July – 27 – 2011

The San Diego Chargers have broken the bank to keep the services of S Eric Weddle.  Weddle cashed in to the tune of 5-years, $40 million with $19 million guaranteed.

Weddle is arguably one of the best safties in the game and now he is being paid like one.  With as many as seven teams being reported to have interest in Weddle San Diego shelled out the cash to keep him in sunny, San Diego for the next five years.

In his four years with the Chargers Weddle has racked up 359 tackles, 4 sacks, 6 INT’s and started 45 of 60 games.

"Takeo Spikes signs with San Diego"Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the San Diego Chargers have come to terms with free agent ILB Takeo Spikes.

As I noted in my AFC free agency guide the Chargers needed to fill a ton of spots on defense and one of them was making a decision on re-signing Kevin Burnett.  I guess their decision has been made with the signing of veteran Takeo Spikes.  Burnett is likely very available after this signing and teams still needing an ILB should jump on the opportunity to sign Burnett.  He is an underrated LB that came into his own in 2010.

Financial details of the Spikes signing have not been made available yet but they are presumably less than what it was going to cost A.J. Smith to re-sign Burnett.  Note to Burnett’s agent:  Buffalo just lost a very good ILB, give them a call.

Jeromey Clary Staying Put in San Diego

Posted by Brad On July – 26 – 2011

"jeromey clary resigns with the Chargers"The San Diego Chargers have agreed to a 4-year, $20 million deal with right tackle, Jeromey Clary.  Clary was a sixth round pick out of Kansas State in the 2006 NFL Draft and has 48 career starts under his belt.

Clary is definitely not a fan favorite in San Diego but he is a consistently average RT that won’t be paid too much.  Kevin Acee has reported that this deal is front end loaded with $8.5 million coming in 2011.  San Diego probably made a wise move on this deal because they can cut him after this season with very little cap impact if he gets Rivers killed in 2011.  If he maintains or plays at a higher level they will essentially have him on a 3-year, $11.5 million deal which isn’t bad for a starting RT in the league.

Also in Charger news, they have signed TE Randy McMichael to a one-year deal.
