Antonio Cromartie Agrees to 4-Year Deal with Jets

Posted by Brad On August – 1 – 2011

"Antonio Cromartie re-signs with the Jets"Jets fans just breathed a collective sigh of relief.  After losing out on Nnamdi Asomugha, Jets fans thought they had lost their chances at getting a top corner.  Well it turns out their secondary will stay intact for 2011 (minus Drew Coleman).

The New York Jets have agreed to a 4-year, $32 million deal with CB Antonio Cromartie.  The 27-year old CB was acquired by the Jets last offseason for second round pick from the Chargers.

Last season for the Jets, Cromartie finished with 42 tackles and 3 INT’s.  For his career he has amassed 207 tackles and 18 INT’s in five seasons.  Cromartie is known for timely INT’s and poor effort in the tackling department.  But he is undoubtedly a good fit next to All-World Darrelle Revis in the Rex Ryan’s system.

Plaxico Burress has Agreed to One-Year Deal with Jets

"New York Jets sign Plaxico Burreess"Where would Plaxico land has filled a significant portion of football fans time during the lockout.  And now with free agency in full swing we have our answer to that question.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter the New York Jets have agreed to a 1-year, $3 million deal that is fully guaranteed with Plaxico Burress. Burress was being courted by former teams; New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers and also met with the San Francisco 49ers.

Burress spent 20 months in jail after discharging an unlicensed firearm into his thigh in a Manhattan nightclub.  With the Jets WR corps cut thin with the losses of Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith, Burress could see action in Edwards old role as the #2 receiver.  If so, the 34-year old Burress could quickly get back his NFL career back on track as Edwards was targeted 102 times last season by Mark Sanchez.

Burress was the eighth overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft out of Michigan St.  He has posted 505 receptions, 7,845 yards, and 55 TD’s in his nine seasons as a pro.

Santonio Holmes and the New York Jets have agreed to a five-year deal that pay Holmes $24 million in guaranteed money.

Sources are indicating that Holmes left money on the table for the Jets to presumably stay in the running for the services of Nnamdi Asomugha.  Holmes likes the Jets organization (favorite of Rex Ryan) and QB Mark Sanchez.  The way the Jets and most notebly Mike Tannenbaum deal with the cap will leave them the flexibility to make a run at another top free agent (i.e. Asomugha).

The combination of a re-signed Holmes and addition of Nnamdi Asomugha would have to make the Jets the odds on favorite for Super Bowl XLVI.

Edit: With the official numbers rolling in at 5-years, $50 million and $24 million guaranteed, I have a hard time imagining he left anything on the table or in Woody Johnson’s checkbook.
