The Jacksonville Jaguars have snuck by me throughout this week. I was hot on the trail of the Paul Posluszny signing and then I didn’t notice some very nice signings they have made including one that is expected to be made later today.
Let’s start with the cuts. The Jags were already in a good cap position but they cut Justin Smiley and Jordan Black. They re-signed QB Luke McCown, CB David Jones, CB Tyron Brackenridge, and WR Jason Hill along with placing the franchise tag on Marcedes Lewis. Now on to where I think they have quietly had one of the most solid free agency periods.
They started with a splash signing Paul Posluszny to a 6-year, $45 million deal. Then they replaced Smiley with an upgrade at less cost in Jason Spitz. Matt Turk replaces Adam Podlesh who went to the Bears. Probably not a win on that one. Yesterday, they got Clint Session for another LB corps upgrade and then will round it out with much needed help at safety in Dawan Landry.
After what I thought was a poor draft the Jags have come up aces in free agency. They need to find a DE still but with teams trying to maneuver to get top level guys there are plenty of good vets to go around at the position. Gene Smith and the rest of his front office came into the week with an obvious plan and it looks like they have accomplished it. Jack Del Rio is somewhere right now smiling about the thought of his tremendously upgraded defense.
