Sunday Recap of Transactions

Posted by Brad On July – 31 – 2011

The entire day for me was wrapped up at Cleveland Browns training camp and away from the computer and cell phone.  It was nice to catch up with some old faces in the Browns organization but the day away was busy in the NFL world.  Here’s a list of what we missed:

The Washington Redskins and T Jamaal Brown agreed to a 5-year contract.

Deuce Lutui showed up to his Cincinnati Bengal physical overweight and was promptly sent packing back to Arizona.  Lutui’s weight has been an issue in the past as he has topped the scales at near 400 lbs in the past.

Tim Hightower was sent to the Washington Redskins for a conditional pick and Vonnie Holliday.  Hightower could start in Washington and appears to be a good fit in Shanahan’s running game.

John Kuhn signed a 3-year deal to stay with the Packers.  Packer fans will be happy as he’s a favorite of the Pack.

Fresh off an assault charge Cedric Benson re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Justin Blalock agreed to a 6-year deal to stay with the Atlanta Falcons

The Detroit Lions were able to retain the services of Chris Houston on a 2-year deal.

The Chicago Bears will not be able to retain Olin Kreutz so they signed C Chris Spencer to a 2-year deal.

Nick Barnett agreed to a 3-year, $12 million deal, $6 million guaranteed with the Buffalo Bills.  He will replace Paul Posluszny at MLB who was lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier in free agency.

Daniel Graham will join the Tennessee Titans on a 3-year deal.

Aaron Rodgers made a public plea for the Packers to keep James Jones and today they listened.  Jones agreed to a 3-year deal to stay with the Packers.

Vonta Leach and the Baltimore Ravens agreed to 3-year, $11 million deal with $6 million guaranteed.

The New Orleans Saints agreed to a 1-year deal with CB Fabian Washington

Chris Carr off the Market; Re-signs with Baltimore

Posted by Brad On July – 30 – 2011

The CB market is getting slimmer by the minute.  In the pass heavy NFL teams are obviously putting an emphasis on having solid corners.

The Baltimore Ravens have re-signed CB Chris Carr after watching Josh Wilson leave town to head to D.C.  Terms of the contract have yet to be released.

Carr was an unsung hero for the Ravens defense as he started all 16 games last season and emerged as the teams best corner in the wake of a season lost to injury for Dominique Foxworth.  Carr has spent six years in the NFL with three teams; Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens.  He has racked up 190 tackles, 6 INT’s and 1.5 sacks in that time.

Marshall Yanda Stays with Ravens

Posted by Brad On July – 26 – 2011

The day after ushering Willis McGahee, Todd Heap, Derrick Mason, and Kelly Gregg out of Baltimore, Ozzie Newsome makes his first big splash. Marshall Yanda, the versatile guard/tackle for the Ravens, was inked to a new deal (terms not disclosed).

Yanda would have garnered a lot of interest on the open market due to his versatility to play multiple positions.  Baltimore wisely did not allow Yanda to hit the open market.  With an offensive line in flux they couldn’t afford to lose Yanda and they made sure they didn’t.

After taking a ton of criticism for cutting team leaders yesterday, Ozzie came back today in a strong fashion by inking Yanda to a deal.

Black Monday for the Baltimore Ravens

Posted by Brad On July – 25 – 2011

Sometimes you get what you ask for.  Fans wanted action and you have action.  The Baltimore Ravens are reportedly going to cut Willis McGahee, Derek Mason, Todd Heap, and Kelly Gregg.

The moves on these veterans pave the way for the Ravens to sign a couple possible big name free agents.  The cutting of Derek Mason leaves a gaping hole in the WR corps.  T.J. Houshmandzadeh is certain to not be back, so they have Anquan Boldin and rookie, Torrey Smith left to speak of.  Could the Ravens make a play for a Steve Smith (CAR)-type?  Or could they be in the market for a Vincent Jackson/Sidney Rice deal?

The Ravens have been tied to Nnamdi Asamogha.  The cuts have cleared the cap space to pave the way for a move of this magnitude.  But the question is whether Ozzie will spend the money on Nnamdi?

Ozzie Newsome has started the official axe period with his veteran locker room leaders.  At this rate could Ray Lewis be cut in the next hour or so?
