Final Inside Linebacker Rankings

Posted by Brad On April – 25 – 2012

"Mychal Kendricks"The 2012 NFL Draft is quickly coming upon us.  With less than ten days until Andrew Luck’s name is called by Roger Goodell, we will be offering our position-by-position rankings with final grades on most of the draftable prospects.

Today we look at the inside linebackers in the 2012 NFL Draft:

1.  Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College

Height:  6032  Weight:  242

Kuechly is one of the safer picks in the draft.  He wasn’t called on to pressure the QB at Boston College so the knock that he can’t has reared it’s ugly head.  Kuechly proved at the Combine that he has the athleticism to rush the passer and make plays sideline-to-sideline.  Kuechly is one of the best coverage linebackers to come out in a long while.

2012 NFL Draft projection:  Top 20

Final Grade: 6.7

2.  Dont’a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

Height:  6022  Weight:  265

Hightower missed most of the 2009 season to a torn ACL and didn’t look healthy in the least in 2010.  He was back to relative full strength for 2011 and solidified himself as a first round pick.  He’s a physical player that has pass rush ability from the inside.  He will struggle in coverage in the NFL but should make up for it with his physical brand of play.

2012 NFL Draft projection:  1

Final Grade: 6.1

3.  Mychal Kendricks, ILB, California

Height:  5110  Weight:  265

If not for his limited size, Kendricks could challenge to be the top ILB in this class, and that’s saying a lot considering who tops this class.  He’s a punisher with plus instincts.  Has the ability to lead a defense in the pros and far and away the most athletic ILB in this class.  Kendricks may wind up a steal of this draft.

2012 NFL Draft projection:  2

Final Grade: 6.1 Read the rest of this entry » «Final Inside Linebacker Rankings»

The Huddle Report is the premiere competition for draftniks to see if all their hard work really paid off in the end.  The top 100 players drafted IS NOT my top 100 board but rather a projection of the players drafted with the top 100 picks in the 2012 NFL Draft.  Here’s a look at my final submission to The Huddle Report, let’s see how I fare.

2012 NFL Draft Defensive Sleepers

Posted by Rob Stanley On April – 24 – 2012

We are only a few short days away from the NFL Draft, a good time to look at potential sleepers that can be found during the draft. These players won’t hear their name called on Thursday night or even Friday night but still have the potential and skills to make an impact at the next level. We already looked at the Offensive Sleepers, so here is a look at some Defensive Sleepers.

"Akiem Hicks"DT Akiem Hicks – Regina – 6’5” 318lbs

Hicks is a former LSU recruit with talent. Hicks has NFL size, length and athleticism and looks the part of an NFL lineman. Hicks has a good burst and strength at the point of attack. His technique needs improvement but he has the talent to be a good player at the next level. With NFL coaching that talent can become something. Hicks has some off the field concerns stemming from the transfer from LSU and also has some other concerns but if he puts those aside and works hard, he can be a real good find for any team and any scheme in the late rounds.

Projection: 5th-6th Round Pick

DE Olivier Vernon – Miami (FL) – 6’2” 261lbs

Vernon is a talented edge player with skills to make an impact at the next level. His skills didn’t always show up at Miami like they should have, raising some concerns. He also has some off the field concerns that got him suspended for 6 games this past season. On the field, Vernon possesses natural size and is athletic. He has good strength in the run game, and shows a nice burst off the edge as a pass rusher. He has good technique in both the run game and pass game, and generally possesses a good motor. This is a potential home run pick if you get the player that Vernon has the potential to be.

Projection: 4th-5th Round Pick

DE Jake Bequette – Arkansas – 6’5” 274lbs

Bequette is a favorite of mine in this draft. Bequette is a blue-collar player, who has a tireless motor and is a hard worker. He has great size, good strength and plays with leverage in the run game. In the passing game he doesn’t have great physical tools, but has a great motor that makes up for his average burst/speed off the edge. He has solid technique, and has the versatility to play on either side and potentially stand up for 3-4 teams, although not his best fit. Bequette, at worst will be a solid backup/rotational player along the DL.

Projection: 4th Round Pick

OLB Miles Burris – San Diego State – 6’2” 246lbs

Burris is a versatile player who can play both inside and out at linebacker at the next level. Like Bequette above, Burris has a good motor and is a tireless worker in pursuit of the ball. Burris has good athleticism, and displays toughness. He displays great instincts and recognition in the passing and running games. Burris can also contribute on special teams at the next level. Burris will definitely make a roster after being picked late in the draft and will be a solid contributor for a long time.

Projection: 5th-6th Round Pick

ILB Jerry Franklin – Arkansas – 6’1” 242lbs

Franklin is a very solid, yet unspectacular football player. He has a good, solid and thick build. He possesses average athleticism and strength. His real assets are his instincts and his feel for the game, which allow him to anticipate and make plays on the ball. He has a nice feel for zone coverage, and is pretty solid in that area. He doesn’t have overwhelming athleticism, but it should be good enough. He can also contribute on special teams.

Projection: 6th Round Pick

CB Coty Sensabaugh – Clemson – 5’11” 189lbs

Sensabaugh is a long, lean, and athletic kid who could develop into a good player at the next level. He showed impressive athleticism at the combine with a good 40 time (4.37) and 3 cone (6.61). Sensabaugh has the ability to also be an effective player contributing on special teams. He needs to work on his technique in order to be effective at the next level but has the size, length and athleticism that teams look for.

Projection: 5th-6th Round Pick

FS Phillip Thomas – Syracuse – 5’11” 198lbs

Phillip Thomas is a player who can make an impact at the next level. He has adequate size, good instincts and impressive ball skills. He doesn’t possess great athleticism, but is good enough in that area. He needs work on his tackling technique, but has good recognition skills and closing ability. He has character concerns stemming from an incident that caused him to be suspended, which could make him fall even further down in the draft. Overall, Thomas is an instinctive playmaker who has good enough size/athleticism to be a rotational defensive back in a weak safety class.

Projection: 5th-6th Round Pick

SS Tony Dye – UCLA – 5’10” 201lbs

A tough, well put together safety. Dye is a hard worker with a good motor. He tackles well, is adequate in coverage and is someone who can make a consistent impact on special teams. He lacks great athleticism, but makes up for that with his instincts and recognition skills. He is a factor in the run game, and is also a solid player in coverage. He projects as a Strong Safety at the next level who will contribute right away on special teams and likely become a starter or part of a rotation at defensive back sooner rather than later.

Projection: 6th Round-UDFA

Draft This, Not That!

Posted by Jeff Risdon On April – 24 – 2012
"Jaye Howard"

Spend a first on Fletcher Cox or hold off until the fourth on Jaye Howard?

When I made a commitment to get in real good shape (for me), one of the most invaluable tools was a book my mother-in-law gave me called “Eat This, Not That!” It was chock full of useful tips and substitutions that made me really think about the value of the calories and nutrients in foods. Valuing the difference between Breyer’s and Haagen-Dazs when I want ice cream, or V-8 Fusion vs. V-8 Splash when I want to get my veggie drink on has been invaluable.

These principles of making smart choices amongst the same basic foods have NFL draft applications as well. Sometimes the high-calorie first round picks pack too much extra risk and fillers when compared with later-round prospects that offer very similar satisfaction and potential NFL production without the risk or guilt.

Looking for a 3-technique defensive tackle that has enough quickness to also play on the edge, or as a 5-technique when morphing to an odd front? Instead of drafting Fletcher Cox in the top 10, draft Jaye Howard in the 4th round.

Look at the tale of the tape on these two SEC defensive tackles:

Cox-6’4”, 298 pounds, 4.79 40 time, 10 3/8” broad jump, 4.53 short shuttle, 85 tackles with 21 TFL and 7.5 sacks the last two seasons.

Howard-6’3”, 301 pounds, 4.75 40 time, 9 7/8” broad jump, 4.47 short shuttle, 94 tackles with 20 TFL and 8 sacks the last two seasons.

Remarkably similar physical metrics, remarkably similar results in the same conference. I’m not here to argue that Jaye Howard is as good as Fletcher Cox; game tape reveals Cox to be a more dynamic presence with better on-field explosion and a more consistent motor. But if a coach can keep Howard’s motor revved and he transforms about 5 pounds of fat on his belly into muscle in his shoulders, he’s a very reasonable facsimile. You’re going to pay a huge premium to get Cox, who definitely has better upside but thus far has not produced any better than Howard, who will go three rounds later. For a team like Carolina or Seattle, it’s a value that makes real sense. Read the rest of this entry » «Draft This, Not That!»

NFL’s Future Reader’s Mock Draft : San Francisco 49ers

2012 NFL Mock Draft – Four Rounds of Draft Fun

Posted by Brad On April – 24 – 2012

"Andrew Luck"1. Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

If it weren’t official before last week, it is now.  Luck will be suiting up for the Colts from day one with some pretty hefty expectations to carry.  The Colts top priority will be surrounding Luck with some weapons at key spots, most notably tight end.

2. Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

The Redskins traded up with the assumption that they could land RGIII at No. 2.  This pick is official as we will get to see the dynamic Baylor QB in the Nation’s Capital in 2012.  Griffin has a host of weapons to play with including newly inked WR Pierre Garcon.  Garcon isn’t a true No. 1 but is one of the top vertical threats in the game.  It just so happens that Griffin throws the prettiest deep ball in this draft.

3. Minnesota Vikings – Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Rick Spielman has officially killed my 100% certainty that Kalil will be a Viking.  He appears dead set on trading down and has even warped my mind with thoughts of Morris Claiborne to the Vikes.  I have mocked Kalil to the Vikes since the draft order became official and it’s too late to look back now.  I fully expect the Vikings to use all the allotted time to make this selection as we will all be sitting on the edge of our seats.

4. Cleveland Browns – Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

I can officially say that I’m 100% certain that Trent Richardson is this pick unless the Browns get “wowed” by a trade offer.  I don’t expect that to happen, so I’m feeling good about this one.  TR is the exception to the rule when it comes to early picks on RB’s and has a very bright future.  Colt McCoy should be jumping up and down in his living room with this selection…at least until the Browns are on the clock at 37.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

His former DB coach is in Tampa, Aqib Talib is on the trading block, and he’s the last of the sure things.  Those factors make me feel pretty comfortable that Claiborne will be the name on TB’s card.  This one shouldn’t take much time to turn in.

6. St. Louis Rams – Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi St.

Justin Blackmon makes a ton of sense here but I don’t see him being the pick here.  Jeff Fisher has a history of taking DT’s high and it continues in his first season in St. Louis.  Cox is a dynamic 3T that immediately upgrades the middle of the STL defensive line. 2012 NFL Draft: Final Outside Linebacker Rankings

Posted by Brad On April – 23 – 2012
"Lavonte David"

Could David land at the end of round one?

The 2012 NFL Draft is quickly coming upon us.  With less than ten days until  Andrew Luck’s name is called by Roger Goodell, we will be offering our position-by-position rankings with final grades on most of the draftable prospects.

Today we look at the outside linebackers in the 2012 NFL Draft:

1. Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska

Height: 6005  Weight: 233

What Lavonte David lacks in size he more than makes up for with his playmaking ability and overall athleticism.  David is best suited on the weak side and is a 4-3 player only.  He possesses outstanding instincts and can play sideline-to-sideline.

2012 NFL Draft projection:  1-2

Final Grade: 6.0

2. Bobby Wagner, OLB, Utah St.

Height: 6003  Weight: 234

I admit that I like Wagner more than most.  The knock on Wagner is that he looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane.  Some of that may be true but the reality remains that he amassed 445 tackles in 46 starts at Utah St.  He will need to work on finding the football on a more consistent basis but his competitiveness will make some NFL team very happy.

2012 NFL Draft projection:  2-3

Final Grade: 6.0

3. Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

Height: 6016  Weight: 253

Ronnell Lewis may be one of the more intriguing prospects in the 2012 NFL Draft.  He has all the makings of a very good pass rushing linebacker in the NFL.  With the versatility to play in either the 4-3 or 3-4 he should come off the board fairly early.  His overall game is raw and he will have to show he can consistently play down in and down out.

2012 NFL Draft projection:  2

Final Grade: 6.0

4. Miles Burris, OLB, San Diego St.

Height: 6020  Weight: 246

Miles Burris is one of my personal favorites in this draft.  He has the makings of an effective edge rushing linebacker in the NFL.  There are some major shortcomings with Burris as he has a tendency to be overaggressive and miss tackles in the open field and hasn’t been overly effective in coverage.  That said, he has a relentless motor and nose for the ball that should make him a steal in the middle rounds of this draft.  Scheme diverse.

2012 NFL Draft projection:  4

Final Grade: 5.9 Read the rest of this entry » «2012 NFL Draft: Final Outside Linebacker Rankings»

2012 NFL Draft : Offensive Sleepers

Posted by Rob Stanley On April – 23 – 2012

We are only a few short days away from the NFL Draft, a good time to look at potential sleepers that can be found during the draft. These players won’t hear their name called on Thursday night or even Friday night but still have the potential and skills to make an impact at the next level.

"B.J. Coleman"

Could B.J. Coleman wind up a steal in the 2012 NFL Draft?

QB B.J. Coleman – Chattanooga – 6’4” 234lbs

A former University of Tennessee transfer, B.J. Coleman is a talented sleeper prospect in this draft. Coleman possesses the size along with physical skill set to be a successful QB at the next level. Coleman has work to do in improving his accuracy as well as his technique and decision making but there is no doubting his talent. Coleman is a player with upside at a premium position with all the skills necessary to succeed, and by all accounts he is a hard worker and a good kid. If Coleman lands in the right situation he could become a capable quarterback in this league and maybe more.

Projection: 4th-5th Round Pick

RB Vick Ballard – Mississippi State – 5’10” 219lbs

A downhill running back that was productive in the SEC. Ballard has good size and thickness and is a north-south runner with little side to side movement. He doesn’t offer much in the passing game, but is a willing blocker. Ballard won’t break many big runs in the NFL, and will never be a highly productive RB but he will be a solid player who gets tough yards and is consistent. He reminds me of BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Projection: 4th-5th Round Pick

WR Devon Wylie – Fresno State – 5’9” 187lbs

Wylie is a tough slot WR who will bring a lot to an NFL team. Wylie has the quickness and agility to play the slot at the next level, but also has good straight line speed as well. Wylie has the ability to play both inside and out but will likely project mostly as a slot WR at the next level. Wylie has good ball skills and shows a willingness to go across the middle consistently. He also has added value on special teams as he is an excellent return man. Wylie will be a good pro for a long time, and will be great value in the mid-late rounds.

Projection: 4th Round Pick

WR Danny Coale – Virginia Tech – 6’0” 201lbs

Another slot WR type here in Danny Coale. Coale is a reliable target with good hands and is able to separate in short areas. Coale displays good quickness and solid straight line speed. He is a tough player who isn’t afraid to make catches over the middle or in traffic. Coale will end up being a late round pick who has to fight to get a roster spot, but there is no doubt in my mind he will stick somewhere. He is a hard worker with toughness, and is a natural slot WR.

Projection: 5th-6th Round Pick

TE Chase Ford – Miami (FL) – 6’7” 255lbs

Ford is a big-bodied TE who has solid athleticism and a good feel for the game. He has the frame to add a lot of weight and strength. Ford is a natural catcher of the football, is a good route runner, and has good feel for zone coverages. On the other hand, Ford is a developmental blocker and while he is a decent athlete lacks great speed/quickness. Ford is someone who will need to be developed, but under the right circumstances can become a starting TE.

Projection: 5th-6th Round Pick

OT James Carmon – Mississippi State – 6’6” 330lbs

Carmon is a former defensive tackle prospect who made a position change to offensive tackle this past year. He has a big body and above average athleticism for his size. He is a work in progress in terms of technique and a feel for the game, because of the position switch. He will need to be developed at the next level, but has intriguing size/athleticism to work with.

Projection: 6th Round Pick

OG Ryan Miller – Colorado – 6’7” 321lbs

Miller is a player with versatility along the offensive line. He has the ability to play both RT and OG, but will likely project more as an OG by teams at the next level. Miller has great size and solid athleticism. He shows the ability to bend and has good balance in the passing game, and is also solid in the run game. Miller has solid technique already and can contribute soon. At the very least Miller will project as a backup in the league for a long time with his versatility, and at best he can become a starting player at either RT or OG.

Projection: 6th Round Pick

C Quentin Saulsberry – Mississippi State – 6’2” 304lbs

Saulsberry is an experienced player out of Mississippi State starting during most of his career there. Saulsberry has good technique and a natural feel for the position. He has solid athleticism and good size for the position. He displays good strength and power at the point of attack. Saulsberry offers up some versatility and experience playing across the offensive line in his time at Mississippi State. He will need some time to make an impact at the next level but could be a good find as a future starting center in the last few rounds.

Projection: 6th Round Pick
