Russell Wilson Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January – 10 – 2012

Russell Wilson

Wisconsin

Ht. 5-11 Wt. 201

Strengths:  Wilson is a solid all around athlete that throws with accuracy.  His accuracy to all areas of the field is excellent.  He becomes even more dangerous on the run as he’s a threat to pull the ball down and can throw with the best of them on the move.  Throws with good velocity despite not having an overly powerful arm.  Has a compact delivery and throws with great anticipation.  He’s a good decision-maker as evidenced by his 3 INT’s in 284 pass attempts.  Leadership abilities are through the roof.

Weaknesses:  Wilson’s height, or lack thereof, will be a major red flag for NFL teams.  At 5’11” he doesn’t possess NFL measurables and will have prove he can overcome his physical stature.  Aside from the physical side there isn’t much to not like about Wilson but that could be a major sticking point for NFL teams.  Read the rest of this entry » «Russell Wilson Scouting Report»

Case Keenum Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 9 - 2012

Case Keenum

Houston

Ht. 6-1 Wt. 210

Strengths:  Keenum has put up some gaudy numbers at Houston.  Has a ton of starting experience.  His accuracy is above-average and throws with very good touch.  He is a surprisingly good athlete that is capable of extending plays with his feet.

Weaknesses:  Lacks the arm strength to make all the NFL throws.  Plays exclusively out of the shotgun at Houston and is the definition of system quarterback.  Very rarely progresses through reads and doesn’t have experience reading defenses under center.  Read the rest of this entry » «Case Keenum Scouting Report»

Ryan Lindley Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 9 - 2012

Ryan Lindley

San Diego State

Ht. 6-4 Wt. 215

Strengths:  Lindley is experienced as a four-year starter at SDSU.  He has played in a pro-style offense.  Has plus arm strength and ton of upside from a physical standpoint.  He shows solid leadership and is a tough and durable veteran.

Weaknesses:  Lindley struggles with accuracy which is mostly caused by poor mechanics.  His footwork leaves a lot to be desired.  His decision-making is not that of a four-year starter in a pro-style offense.  He has a tendency to lock onto receivers and miss open guys and fails to move safeties.  His low completion percentage is a major concern as an NFL QB.  Read the rest of this entry » «Ryan Lindley Scouting Report»

Kellen Moore Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 8 - 2012

Kellen Moore

Boise State

Ht. 6-0 Wt. 188

Strengths:  Moore may have the best touch and accuracy of any quarterback not named Andrew Luck in the draft.  He shows great anticipation with his throws and can throw receivers open when needed.  His football acumen is through the roof and could be a solid West Coast quarterback.

Weaknesses:  The physical tools are lacking with Moore.  He checks in at 6-0 and 188 pounds which is not conducive for taking the weekly beating of the NFL.  His arm strength is below-average and can’t make all the throws necessary at the next level.  His mechanics are flawed and will need changed at the next level.  Read the rest of this entry » «Kellen Moore Scouting Report»

Kirk Cousins Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 8 - 2012

Kirk Cousins

Michigan State

Ht. 6-3 Wt. 208

Strengths:  Cousins is a smart and efficient signal caller that throws a catchable ball when the pocket is clean.  He moves nicely in the pocket to avoid sacks.  He can make all the throws necessary in the NFL.  His accuracy is on point with a clean pocket.  Excels in the play-action game.  Solid leader that has some good starting experience in the Big 10.  Has a short and compact delivery.

Weaknesses:  Cousins struggles and tends to make poor decisions when faced with pressure.  He runs a little hot and cold during games and is reliant on play-action too much at MSU.  He has tendency to lock into his first or second read without going through his progression.  He telegraphs his passes with his eyes and doesn’t do a good enough job of moving safeties to creat window to throw down the seam.  He will need to add to weight to his slender frame to withstand the week in, week out beating in the NFL.

Bottom Line:  Cousins could be a nice option as a backup in the league in the 5th round range.  He does possess the skills to play at the next level but needs to work on throwing in the face of pressure.  As a prospect, he doesn’t grade out as high as previous MSU quarterback, Brian Hoyer.  Hoyer went undrafted.

Draft Projection:   Cousins should go in the 5th to 6th round range but may go higher with the lack of depth at the position.

Chandler Harnish Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 8 - 2012

Chandler Harnish

Northern Illinois

Ht. 6-2 Wt. 220

Strengths:  A ton of upside with Harnish.  Four-year starter for NIU that has a ton of athletic ability.  His most promising skill is his ability to create plays with his feet.  His athleticism is through the roof.  Harnish has a big arm that is capable of making any/every throw necessary in the NFL.  Consistently throws into tight windows.

Weaknesses:  The mental side of his game has yet to catch up with the physical.  He very rarely goes through his progressions and has a tendency to lock onto his first option.  If the first option is covered he takes off.  He will need a lot of time to develop into a starting quarterback in the NFL.  Reminscent of Dan LeFevour.

Bottom Line:  Harnish brings a ton of physical tools to the game which could intrigue scouts from a developmental standpoint.  A four-year starter that will need time to master an NFL playbook.  He may be worth the risk in round 4 of the draft.

Draft Projection:  Harnish is a player with some upside that should go between rounds 4 and 5.

Nick Foles Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 7 - 2012

Nick Foles

Arizona

Ht. 6-5 Wt. 245

Arm Strength:  The Michigan State-transfer possesses one of the strongest arms in the draft.  That’s the good news and bad news.  He is capable of making every throw on the football field.  However, he has a tendency to overthrow receivers and throw the ball into coverage.

Accuracy:  His quick release helps his accuracy.  If he misses it’s usually high which can lead to interceptions.  Foles’ accuracy is above average and when he is able to set his feet and stride into the throw he rarely misses.

Athleticism:  Foles lacks elite foot speed and often doesn’t feel the pressure from the backside.  He does well with his pocket mobility and isn’t a complete statue but can’t make plays with his feet.

Intangibles:  Foles is an experienced starter at Arizona and possesses good leadership skills.  He is a good decision maker but appears to struggle in grasping complex defensive systems.  Major concern of his football IQ at the next level.  Often seems unsure of where he is going with the ball before the snap which leads to mistakes.  He is noted by coaches and teammates as a hard worker in the film room and is usually the first to arrive and last to leave the practice field.

Bottom Line:  Foles has some solid skills to be an NFL quarterback.  Most believe he will be an early day two pick.  My concerns with his football acumen and inability to throw when the pocket isn’t perfectly clean lead me to believe he is a developmental prospect that should be drafted in the 3rd/4th round range.

Draft Projection:  Foles is a fifth round prospect that will likely move up with the lack of depth.  He could go as high as round three with the floor being round four.

Brandon Weeden Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 7 - 2012

Brandon Weeden

Oklahoma State

Ht. 6-5 Wt. 225

Arm Strength:  The former minor league baseball player throws a ball that jumps out of his hand.   He can make any throw that is required in the NFL with ease and has enough arm strength to fit the ball into tight spots.  Weeden throws one of the best deep balls in this draft.

Accuracy:  Weeden’s accuracy is on point with the best in this draft.  He has outstanding short-area accuracy and deep touch.  He often throws receivers open.  He appears to have outstanding confidence in his arm strength and ball placement as he challenges defenders in tight windows.   Weeden’s accuracy dramatically decreases when he gets pressure in his face. Brock Osweiler Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 6 - 2012

Brock Osweiler

Arizona St

Ht. 6-8 Wt. 245

Arm Strength:  Osweiler may have the strongest arm in this draft.  He can make every throw necessary with enough zip to be considered an elite arm in the NFL.  The ASU system really didn’t spotlight Osweiler’s arm talent as he threw a ton of bubble screens and underneath throws.  In the NFL he could be dangerous in an offense predicated on downfield passing.  His release was an issue early in his career but he has worked on making it shorter and more compact which gives him the ability to get the ball out quicker.

Accuracy:  He is a generally accurate passer but he has a tendency to rush throws causing his accuracy to plummet.  He throws accurately deep and does a solid job throwing into windows in zone coverage.  His feet are usually the culprit of an errant throw. Ryan Tannehill Scouting Report

Posted by Brad On January - 6 - 2012

Ryan Tannehill

Texas A&M

Ht. 6-4 Wt. 222

Arm Strength:  Tannehill has the arm strength to stretch the defense.  He can fit the ball into tight windows.  He won’t blow scouts away with his arm but has enough to be considered  above-average.

Accuracy:  Tannehill has actively worked on his accuracy.  He still makes too many mistakes with the ball but that will come with his development in reading defenses.  Tannehill is accurate on the move which makes him a danger because of the possibility to pull the ball down and make plays.

Athleticism:   Before taking over at QB for Jerrod Johnson at A&M he played wide receiver.  He has the ability to scramble and throw on the run.  His athleticism is very similar to that of 2011 2nd rounder, Colin Kaepernick.

Intangibles:  Tannehill is the clear leader of the A&M team but still is learning the position.  He makes some bad reads which allows for interceptions and will have to cut those down in the NFL.  Tannehill has the football acumen and an added advantage of playing for Mike Sherman.  He has only a year and a half of experience under center but has shown the ability to develop in a short period of time.  His upside is through the roof once he can focus on being a quarterback as a profession.
