"NFL Mock Draft"

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

We are two weeks into the 2013 college football season and already there have been some major curveballs thrown our way as it relates to the 2014 draft class.

David Fales may not be who we thought he was. The one concern I had was grasping a new system and how well he’d function with it. After two games things are looking good for Fales as he needed to be great to overcome some of the physical limitations. Fales isn’t the only one struggling but it’s the risers that have me a bit miffed.

I wasn’t a Zach Mettenberger guy based off previous tape but he’s slowly making me a believer. Cam Cameron is proving he’s worth every penny as Mettenberger has been outstanding early this season. Another quarterback that is making me a believer is Derek Carr. Carr’s faulty mechanics – threw off back foot more often than not – appears to be a thing of the past.

On the defensive side of the ball the talk will be surrounded around Jadeveon Clowney. Coming into the season as the clear cut No. 1 there’s only one place to go and that’s down. Clowney’s conditioning or lack thereof has come into question but that won’t matter one bit come May. He’s a top shelf talent with rare physical tools and a lock to be taken in the top three of this draft. Any other opinion is just noise and most likely trolling for reads.

Two games is such a small sample size but it gives us a pretty good idea of how things will play out. All this is likely to change – probably drastically – over the next eight months but it’s always fun to look back at these and have a good laugh. After the break, we’ll break down each position.

Glad to see my UCF Knights representing on the list with Blake Bortles. He’s haveing a great start. Though I think you are too low on McCarron, who I’ll admit has not had the best start with 110 yes 1 td and 1 pick, but he is the real deal. There’s the obvious proven winner, NFL body (6’4″ 214 or so) and the great decision making throughout his career. I had the pleasure of participating in the Manning Passing Acedemy (*yes I am looking aat you Johnny “‘Canadian’ Football”*) and working personally with AJ and he had a rocket. I caught my fair share of passes from him (as I play wideout) and he had one of the strongest arms of anyone there, including Peyton and Eli (whom I also had the honor of meeting). I’ve always been an advocate for Murray as well simply because he has proven to be a great QB in college, putting up fantastic numbers, and he has the ability in my opinion to be a starting QB in the NFL in the right system. Do I think he’s got a Flacco arm, no, but he can sling as long as plenty of the starting QBs in the league right now.I’m not much of a fan of Boyd, but I can see why you are. He has the tools, thats for sure. Anyway, this is my top ten(underclassmen and seniors combined):

    1-Teddy Bridgewater
    2- Brett Hundley
    3- AJ McCarron
    4- Stephen Morris
    5- Tajh Boyd
    6- Marcus Mariota
    7- Devin Gardner
    8- David Fales
    9- Derek Carr
    10- Zach Mettenberger

    Best Of the Rest
-Jimmy Garoppolo & Jeff Matthews (and the other small schoolers, I haven’t gotten to see enough tape yet to formulate an informed opinion on them)
-Logan Thomas, Johnny Manziel, and Braxton Miller (obviously all of them have great physical ability, and all have red flags. With Manziel, well those are well-documented, Miller hasn’t truly look polished enough yet, and some for Thomas)

I’ll post my other position rankings as I go through the rest of yours.

Bortles has UCF rolling and is making the draft community take notice. He’s a prospect on the rise for sure. He may be working his way up our rankings very soon.

Glad to see UCF with another name in the HB department. Storm Johnson(what a name by the way) is a stellar back. I may be biased, as he’s my favorite player in college football right now. He’s in my top ten RBs for sure. I’m also a fan of Carey, Wilder, Seastrunk, and Thomas. Here’s my list and my snubs:

    1- Lache Seastrunk
    2- Ka’deem Carey
    3- James Wilder
    4- De’Anthony Thomas
    5- Charles Sims
    6- Storm Johnson
    7- Bishop Sankey
    8- Marlon Grice
9- Melvin Gordon (need to get my hands on more film, I’m gonna use this weekend to get in some scouting)
    10- Rajion Neal

    Guys Who need more tape:
    -the Small-Schoolers (Flanders, Crowell)
-Michael Dyer (X-Factor type guy because of his name, if he can produce, he will stay on my radar for now)

Wideouts: For the most part I agree with what you said. So here’s the list:

    1- Watkins
    2- Lee
    3- Kasen WIlliams
    4- Saunders
    5- Matthews
    6- Paul Richardson
    7- Brandon Coleman
    8- DeVante Parker
    9- Josh Huff
    10- Odell Beckham Jr.

    Snubs:
-Herron (tape) I’ll look into him too.

  • Braeden

    TE’s:

    1- Austin Sefarian Jenkins
    2- Amaro
    3- Fiedorowcz

    4- Bolser
    5- Lyerla
    6- Lynch
    7- Mcgee
    8- Clive Wlaford
    9- Pedersen
    10-Ebron

  • Braeden

OT’s: I thought Matthews looked as good as any tackle drafted last year, including former teammate Luke Joeckel. Lewan was also a top 10 lock for me last year but he decided to return. To me those two are the headliners clearly and take 1-2 in whatever order. I haven’t seen anything on Ogbeuhi but I do like Corey Robinson.

    1- Matthews
    2- Lewan
    3- Kuoandijo
    4- Robinson
    5- Hurst
    6- Henderson
    7- Erving
    8- Richardson
    9- Moses
    10- Scherff

  • Braeden

    OGs:
    1- Richardson
    2- Jackosn
3- Su’a-Filo (who will get looked at for his ability to play tackle too)
    4- Long
    5- Jackson
    6- Yankey
    7- Steen
    8- Martin
    9- Bunche
    10- Groy

  • Braeden

    C’s:

    1- Richburg
    2- Bodine
    3- Grasu
    4- Stone
    5- Stork
    6- Ikard
    7- Swanson
    8- Larson

An unexpected yet pleasant surprise to see this post 2 weeks in! Cheers =) Interesting selections, that I won’t go into as there’s too many that could be discussed! I’ll keep a note to go back and have a look later on in the year though, as I enjoy doing with mine also.

One query however: Mike Evan’s positioning in the Underclassmen WR’s caught my eye. I have him sitting 3rd behind Lee & Watkins. Just wondering your thoughts on him, and what you need to see for him to rise up the list? I know he has a lot to learn in some specifics of in depth concepts of playing the position, but I think he’s a rare prospect who I’d take ahead of Coleman (in an unfair unofficial “big guy” category!).

Where is Austin Hill and Tony Jones at Bradley? Why is Hoffman ranked so low?

    • bradc11

Can’t envision Hill coming out after tearing his ACL in the spring. I haven’t seen a game nor heard of Tony Jones. Not a fan of Hoffman – he’s going to be hurt with a running QB and doesn’t have skill set that jumps off the page. I think he’s a day three guy.

        A junior WR from Northwestern.

  • neighborhooddrunkpart2

About time you given MATTHEWS his props.

    • bradc11

Matthews has answered many of the questions I had on him already this season. I’ve walked away impressed with his improvement – burst, separation, and spatial awareness are a world better f/what I saw in 2012. It’s evident he’s put some work in because those things weren’t there last season.
