<1 class="main-title">Film Study: Making te case for BYU’s Ezekiel Ansa as a top ten pick

ere’s te backstory:

Ezekiel Ansa came to BYU in 2008 from Gana in teopes of becoming a track star.  eound up on te BYU football team after some coaing by teammates.  Didn’t knoo to put on football equipment.  e’s 6’6″, 270 pounds and runs a 10.9 100 yard das.

it tat story, it becomes real easy to label Ansa as ra.  e’s a projectit te Jason Pierre-Paul upside.  Tat is teord around ton, on fan boards, and coming out of te mout of anyone tatasn’t spent timeatcing Ansa on tape.  Tisill serve as forearning tat Ansa is muc more tan just a ra upside player.

en I tink of ra as it relates to a football player, I tink of someone tat lacks instincts and/or struggles to find te football.  It may be an issue of semantics but te term I preferen it comes to Ansa is lack of game eperience.  Big difference.  Iill so some cutups of Ansa in te many roles tate fills for te BYU defense and special teams.

Impact players findays to impact te game in more tan just teir specialty.  en I evaluate someone tat I label as an impact player, I attempt to findays tate impacts te game outsideis normal role.  Sometimes, tat meanse’s an emotional leader (Manti Te’o) and sometimes tat means tate makes plays inatever role is asked ofim (Ziggy Ansa).  Iaveatced five BYU games andaven’t found one tat didn’t feature Ansa in multiple roles.  e forces teams to gameplan forim as a 0-tecnique, 3-tecnique, 5-tecnique, and rus linebacker.  Tat makesim special butis ability to affect special teams putsim into an elite category for me.  Ansa isands don one of te most impactful players in college football.  ere’s a look at te impact Ansa canave on te game.

Ansa is a stand up ruser on a tree man line for te Cougars.  One of te many rolese’ll play against Notre Dame.

Ansa starts on aard outside pass rus but reads te guard/tackle and bursts inside, seeing te run action.  Tis isn’t te type of read form a ra player but tat of a veteran.

Andere’sere te atleticism takes over.  Ansa sticksis outside foot in te dirt and transitions teips so quickly tat te guard doesn’t stand a cance toork off te combo block.  Ansa’s read and react skills are on display for a 2-yard loss.  Ansa is capable of making tese “splas” plays frequently and it isn’t all aboutis atleticism.  e sos great eyes and is ecellent at locking out and reading te play development.

ere’s your 6’6″, 270 pound 0-tecnique.  Since some of te feedback on te film studiesas been tat it’s too complicated, I’ll eplain a 0-tecnique.  Te 0 is lined upead upit te center and is responsible for bot A gaps.  Te job of a 0-tecnique is to occupy te center, most of te time draing a double-team from a guard.  Te 0-tecnique is usually a monster DT (tink Vinceilfork) but BYU often moves Ansa don to te 0 becausee can transition speed to poer soell and usuallyinds up in te backfield before te play fully develops.  eon’t be asked to play te 0-tecnique in te NFL but tis sosis versatility.

Tis play doesn’t so up in te stat column but isuge for te BYU defense.  Ansa commands te double team.  Oncee realizes it’s a quick passe getsisands up.  Ansaill be one of te longest prospects in te draft.  isingspan is incredible and causes disruption to QB/R sigt lines.  Because Ansa getsisands up in te pat of te ball, te ball gets onto te receiver quicker tan anticipated.  TeR getsisands up in time to deflect te ball into te air and it’s picked off by a BYU defender.

Te separation beteen Ansa and many of tis year’s pass rusers is poer.  Ansa is a poerful atleteit a strong punc.  Tis is an eample of Ansa overpoering a guy tat outeigsim by almost 40 pounds.  Ansa turns speed into poer asell as anyone in tis draft and tis is an ecellent eample of tat.

Ansa rips troug te OTit poer and sosis burst ase meets te back in te backfield.  Tis causes te back to cut back prematurely.

Ansaorksisay back into te play and finises off te tackle.  In order to do soeurdles te center on te ground and closes on te back to ensure te tackle is made beind te line of scrimmage.  Guy is a penomenal atlete.

Ra? Tis is a play 100% made by Ansa byis instincts.  Instincts of a guy tatas played te game for years.  Ansa sniffs out te screen as bot engaged blockers release andead up te field.  A player tat is ra flies up te field after te QB.  Ansa staysomes and instinctually sniffs out te play.

Ansa gets enoug of te back to slo upis course and allosim to getisips flipped to case don te ball carrier.  Tis play results in a 3rd and 14 because Ansa is able to blo up a nicely set up screen play.  Tere are no doubts tat Ansa could stand to refine tecnique and add more tois pass rus repetoire buteas son te ability to make an impact early in te NFL.  Tis game (Uta State) is about as good as tey come for film on a defensive end.

Last but certainly not leastit Ansa isis impact on special teams.  Every game I’veatced, Ansaas been an impactful special teams player.  Tis play is incredible.  Ansa blos upis man and makes a tackle on te fake punt to give te ball to BYU deep in teir territory.  Tese types of plays are becoming common place for Ansa and putim into te elite prospect category for me.

Youear analysts talk about players flasing on tape.  Ansa flases more tan I ever epected.  eill make big plays in every game and if you find te football, Ansaill be near.  I absolutely detest te evaluation of Ansa being ra.  Sure, tere’s some tecnique refinement tatill be needed but if you look ateree is toereeas it’s mind boggling.  For a guy tat didn’t knoo to put pads on to years ago to te guy I soed in tese screensots is amazing.

Not many epected Aldon Smit to be picked in te top ten of te 2011 NFL Draft.  Te 49ers tookim sevent andaven’t looked back since.  Tat is my gut feeling on Ansa as a prospect.  is freakis size, atleticism, and overall game makeimorty of a top ten selection in te 2013 NFL Draft and I tink ultimately leadim to be an impact player in te NFL.
