Talented but troubled CB Janoris Jenkins will be featured in the game that pits No. 1 vs. No. 2 in Division II
Sure it’s a Division II matchup but it pits the two of the top teams who are also division rivals. This matchup features the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the AFCA Top 25 and also gives a look into a talented but controversial 2012 NFL Draft prospect, Janoris Jenkins.
Delta State is led by senior QB Micah Davis, who has thrown for over 6,000 yards and 42 TD’s in his career. He will be hounded by Janoris Jenkins, the former UF standout corner that has his share of talent and skeletons. Jenkins has received the Darrelle Revis treatment so far in 2011 with very few looks coming his way.
Player to Watch
Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
Jenkins is very rarely tested in the ranks of the Gulf South Conference but he will face a very good squad led by one of the best quarterbacks in Division II football. Jenkins may be the most talented CB in the 2012 NFL Draft but he comes with some major red flags which could push him out of round 1. Jenkins substance abuse issues are well documented along with a 2009 arrest which resulted in a resisting arrest charge. Baltimore snagged Jimmy Smith in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft and he had similar issues to Jenkins. Jenkins transfer to Division II North Alabama hasn’t been full of highlights, which may be a good thing for someone needing to fly under the radar. He has yet to be tested by anyone in 2011 but could see some action in this battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2.
Jenkins possesses all of the physical skills of a top corner but needs to work on tackling on a more consistent basis. He tends to look for a highlight reel hit as opposed to a form tackle which leads to big plays. He plays with a level of aggression unmatched at the position and is solid in man or zone coverage. He is hands down the most well rounded, talented cornerback in this draft class but time will tell on whether teams can get past his off-the-field issues.
