Pre-Combine 2013 NFL Draft Top 200 Prospects

Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

I’m about 90% complete with my scouting reports and all video review of the 2013 draft class. All this time off a full-time job has really helped out in a dire situation. In December I was worried I wouldn’t be completed with this class by the time the draft rolled around. I’m back and probably ahead of schedule. Throughout this process a couple things stood out to me.

First, this is a strong and deep draft class despite what you may be hearing elsewhere. I think you can find starters through the third round. Secondly, a couple position groups are really strong at the top. The tight end class could be historically good as it provides top end talent with starters deep into the draft. The defensive tackle class is very strong (3 in the top 10) at the top and fairly deep. And lastly, your guess is as good as mine on this quarterback class. I found it a near impossibility to rank them among the other positions.

I opted to release the rankings before the players worked out in Indianapolis as part of an experiment for myself as I’m attempting to see how much the Combine affects my rankings. Last year, I found I weighted it too strongly and it affected my rankings in a negative way. This season, I identified seventeen players in my top 100 that I had questions about certain evaluations that could be answered at the Combine. In my post-Combine rankings those seventeen will be the only ones to move up or down the board as it should remain pretty stagnant.

After the break check out our pre-Combine top 200 2013 NFL Draft prospects.

You had been really high on werner and Moore all year saying they were both to 10 players and and even top 5 at one point. what changed? How is carradine so high with the ACL injury? and lastly, Why so low on Kawaan Short, he is a borderline 2 on your list when many others see him as a potential late first round prospect?

    • Brad

It’s not that I’ve soured on Werner and Moore it’s just that I like others more. In Werner’s case I was really high on him…had him 2nd or 3rd on my overall rankings. As I finish film on all these guys and let it sink in, I didn’t see him as being better than some of these other guys. The last part of my evaluation is to compare and contrast these guys versus each other to come up with the rankings. I think this is a strong draft while others see it as weak. The top of this draft is loaded. Yeah, there’s lock for the first pick but I think there’s impact players through the first 10-12 players and starters into the late third round.

I’m a huge fan of Carradine’s. Without the injury I would have slotted him in the 10-15 range as I believe he’s an impact rusher at the next level. There’s were times on film that I thought he was the better pure pass rusher of the two FSU DE’s…and I like Werner.

Short doesn’t do a whole lot for me. Flashes big at times (sometimes at the biggest times, thought he was great in 2011 against OSU) but I worry about that in the NFL. I have mocked him to Seattle in the first and I think he winds up in that range but for me and my rankings he’s a late 2.

Highest guys on my board that don’t appear on yours are Blaize Foltz (96), Micah Hyde (117), Aaron Mellette (144) and Garrett Gilkey (145).

I think your plans for the combine are very sensible, too easy to let it affect rankings. Not going to ask you list all 17, but who are some of the key guys who have the potential to improve and decrease their position on your rankings on the basis of combine results?

I’ve ended up with the following at the top of my board, if it’s of any interrest!

    1 Luke Joeckel Texas A&M
    2 Chance Warmack Alabama
    3 Eric Fisher Central Michigan
    4 Star Lotulelei Utah
    5 Sheldon Richardson Missouri
    6 Bjoern Werner Florida State
    7 Jarvis Jones Georgia
    8 Dee Milliner Alabama
    9 Sharrif Floyd Florida
    10 Damontre Moore Texas A&M
    11 Ezekiel Ansah Brigham Young
    12 Dion Jordan Oregon
    13 Lane Johnson Oklahoma
    14 Geno Smith West Virginia
    15 Johnathon Hankins Ohio State
    16 Barkevious Mingo LSU
    17 Kevin Minter LSU
    18 Alec Ogletree Georgia
    19 Jonathan Cooper North Carolina
    20 DeAndre Hopkins Clemson
    21 Cordarrelle Patterson Tennessee
    22 Manti Te’o Notre Dame
    23 Kenny Vaccaro Texas
    24 Zach Ertz Stanford
    25 Markus Wheaton Oregon State
    26 Xavier Rhodes Florida State
    27 Johnthan Banks Mississippi State
    28 Keenan Allen California
    29 Alex Okafor Texas
    30 Larry Warford Kentucky
    31 Datone Jones UCLA
    32 Eddie Lacy Alabama
    33 Logan Ryan Rutgers
    34 Tyler Eifert Notre Dame
    35 Kawann Short Purdue
    36 Matt Elam Florida
    37 Barrett Jones Alabama
    38 Terrance Williams Baylor
    39 Jesse Williams Alabama
    40 D.J. Fluker Alabama

Blaize Foltz is a guy that I like but haven’t seen enough of him yet to really put him in my rankings. Hyde’s a guy that I’ve seen a ton on but not sure where he fits in the NFL. He can play (watched since he was playing HS football at Fostoria) but not sure that he’s a corner and I hate projecting corners transitioning to safety. I was underwhelmed with Mellette on tape and during the Senior Bowl. He was a guy Cody flagged for me in his coverage of the event as someone that looked out of place. On tape, he was good but didn’t dominate competition at the level that I expect. Gilkey, I haven’t seen any tape on him but he looks like a guard…probably won’t rank him only because I don’t think I will get my hands on any tape.

Like the rankings, they look solid to me.

    • Bex_R1986

Just to follow up on my first paragraph above, I can’t understand why more people aren’t higher on TCU OG Blaize Foltz. The guy is a wall in pass protect and created huge holes in the running game. He has the size to replicate his excellent performances at the pro level.

I heard the Saints are very keen on him in the middle rounds and I can’t believe they are the only ones. He dominated every interior lineman I saw him play against and I think he’s a worthy top 100 player in this draft.

      • bradc11

I won’t name all 17 but I will be paying attention to Keenan Allen’s 40 time. Really don’t have a feel for his game speed. If he runs poorly I could lower him a bit. Jordan Poyer is another guy I want to see run well at the Combine. The major question mark for me on his game was ability to run with speed. Teams stopped throwing his way because of his ball skills so I don’t have a great feel for his long speed. In addition to the 17 guys I’ll be watching at the Combine, I still have tape to review. For instance I’m working on Jordan Mills and Quinton Patton as we speak.

  • Bex_R1986

P.S. I was looking for Sanders Commings and couldn’t find him. I realise it’s because you’ve listed him as a South Carolina player. Just to advise, as you may want to change to Georgia!

      Good catch…thanks
