"2012 NFL Draft prospect, Doug Martin"

First prediction of the year: Doug Martin steal of the draft

33.  St. Louis Rams:  Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson.

St. Louis can’t stop the run but Brandon Thompson can.

34.  Indianapolis Colts:  Jamell Fleming, CB, Oklahoma

The CB depth in Indy is atrocious.  Fleming will fit in Chuck Pagano’s defense.

35.  Minnesota Vikings:  Vontaze Burfict, ILB, Arizona St.

Not the biggest need but he makes this defense better if he’s motivated.

36.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers:  Doug Martin, RB, Boise St.

Doug Martin is the steal of the draft.  Martin is the second best back in the draft and represents a steal at 36 in our 2012 NFL Mock Draft.

37.  Cleveland Browns:  Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois

Immediate upgrade over Jayme Mitchell and beginnings of a dominant defensive line in Cleveland.

38.  Jacksonville Jaguars:  Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse

After age and free agency hit the Jags DE’s they could be in trouble.  Jones is one of the more talented pass rushers in the draft and may wind up a steal.

39.  Washington Redskins:  Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

Sanu is my peace offering for ‘Skins fans after giving them Tannehill at No. 6.

40.  Carolina Panthers:  Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina

Brown is an excellent fit and fills a major need to the Panthers.

41.  Buffalo Bills:  Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona St.

No doubt the Bills have bigger needs but they can’t afford to pass on the value that Osweiler brings at 41.  He could push Fitzpatrick in the near future.

42.  Miami Dolphins:  Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

Peyton or Flynn will enjoy their squad picking up this big target at TE.

43.  Seattle Seahawks:  Brandon Weeden, QB, Oklahoma St.

I think Seattle trades up to grab Weeden but ends up with him in some way.  Great fit for this team and could replace Tarvaris Jackson immediately.

44.  Kansas City Chiefs:  Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

The Chiefs could be replacing Brandon Carr and Dennard stops his slide at 43.

45.  Dallas Cowboys:  Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia

Boykin’s Senior Bowl injury may affect him a little but he’s got Jerry Jones written all over him.

46.  Philadelphia Eagles:  Bobby Wagner, OLB, Utah St.

Wagner is an immediate starter for the Eagles in their LB corps.

47.  New York Jets:  Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

The Jets get their pass rusher in the 2nd.

48.  New England Patriots (f/OAK):  Jared Crick, DE/DT, Nebraska

Is there a better fit than Crick to the Pats?

49.  San Diego Chargers:  Cam Johnson, OLB, Virginia

The Chargers elect to upgrade their LB corps with their top two picks.  They better get some OL help in free agency.

50.  Chicago Bears:  Rueben Randle, WR, LSU

Randle is big and raw.  He may have to learn on the fly in Chicago.

51.  Philadelphia Eagles (f/ARZ):  Joe Adams, WR, Arkansas

Joe Adams is a speedy target that could be a good value in round 2.  Sounds familiar for Eagles fans but this one comes without all the headaches.

52.  Tennessee Titans:  Kelechi Osemele, OG, Iowa St.

I don’t know if I like this fit but I like the player and fills a major need.

53.  Cincinnati Bengals:  Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

Bengals fans have to be ecstatic about this draft.  Wright, Jenkins and Miller to kick it off.  No, I’m not a Bengals fan.

54.  Detroit Lions:  Vinny Curry, DE, Marshall

The Lions could be without KVB and Avril next season.  As much as Lions fans would love to believe Willie Young and Lawrence Jackson are the answer…they are not.

55.  Atlanta Falcons:  Mitchell Schwartz, OT, Cal

Some will view this as gigantic reach but turn on some film of Schwarz.  I ran across coaches tape of Cal/USC.  Dominated Nick Perry and it was no different all season.  May wind up the best RT in this draft and I’m including Jon Martin in that category.

56.  Pittsburgh Steelers:  Ryan Steed, CB, Furman

Steed is a guy that I fully expect to rise over the next several months.  Solid player that got a bad rap for his struggles against Andre Debose.  Hate to tell you but watch Dre Kirkpatrick in the same matchup.

57.  Denver Broncos:  Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan St.

I’m not a huge Worthy fan but I think this is his floor.

58.  Houston Texans:  Juron Criner, WR, Arizona

The Texans find a solid option to play opposite Andre Johnson.

59.  New Orleans Saints:  Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska

Excellent value on a guy that should go much higher.

60.  Green Bay Packers:  David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech

If you’re the Packers, why not?  Wilson is a dynamic back that can catch the ball out of the backfield.  Ryan Grant is done is GB and Alex Green didn’t look all that impressive before his injury.

61.  Baltimore Ravens:  Brandon Washington, OG, Miami

Ben Grubbs will be costly to keep and they could look for his replacement early in this draft.

62.  San Francisco 49ers:  Chris Givens, WR, Wake Forest

Givens has some upside and could be a solid complement to Michael Crabtree.

63.  New England Patriots:  Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

Why not?  A big, raw prospect that could be a huge hit.

64.  New York Giants:  Orson Charles, TE, Georgia

It will be fun watching Eli throw to Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, and Orson Charles.  Charles isn’t much of a blocker but he could be huge hit in the passing game.

First let me say I love David Wilson as a prospect, reminds me very much of LeSean McCoy. (I watched the 1st VT vs. Clemson game to scout Branch and came away very impressed with Wilson) But the Packers really need to address the defensive side of the ball early to get impact players. And I also don’t know how you can honestly say Alex Green didn’t impress before his injury, I’d like to know when you saw him play enough to come to that conclusion? Are you referring to his 3 rushes against Denver? Or his 1 catch against Atlanta? The jury is still out on him, but training camp reports were mostly positive and the Packers invested a 3rd round pick on him. TT gives his guys time to develop ie. Pat lee, Justin Harrell etc… I think if the Packers went into the season next year with Starks, Green, and Saine we would be just fine, maybe grab a guy late with upside but investing a 2nd round pick into a RB with our current roster doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

As far as the 1st round selection of Andre Branch I can’t complain too much. I don’t think I’m nearly as high on Branch as others. Every time I watched him I tried to convince myself that he is special but just couldn’t get there with him. He flashes good ability to get to the qb, and I really like how he plays down the line of scrimmage when the play runs away from him but overall I don’t see the explosion to his game, or the natural bend to consistently get around the corner. An aspect of his game that I like and intrigues me is that he has some experience playing linebacker, his ability to play in space his huge, as none of the Packer linebackers can really cover. I wouldn’t be too disappointed with the pick but there are some other OLB I like a little more.

On Green, I’m only going on what I hear from those around the team. We got varying reports on his training camp performance. The reality is that if Wilson wasn’t there, I would have went with a DE or best defensive player available. No doubts that’s the need.

Where we disagree is on philosophy. If you’re saying he reminds you of LeSean McCoy, you’re going to let him pass because you have James Starks, Alex Green, and Brandon Saine on your roster. You are the Packers, not the Browns…it’s not like you have to fill a ton of holes. You take LeSean McCoy if you think LeSean McCoy is sitting there in the 2nd unless Adrian Peterson is lining up behind Rodgers.

If Branch makes it to 28 he’s a good value and fits a huge need. I’m in the minority but I think he’s a better 4-3 DE than 3-4 OLB. My major concern with his game is he is a linear athlete that may struggle in the hips. As a pass rusher, I don’t have many critiques. We’ll have to agree to disagree on the bend part of your assessment. He plays high at times but that would be nitpicking him as a pass rusher. I like him anywhere from 20-25 and think he’s a bargain after that.

You have to remember the offense Green came from in Hawaii was much different than what the Packers run, it was going to take him some time to adjust. It doesn’t make sense to say he didn’t look impressive when he didn’t have any opportunities.

I totally understand your philosophy and get where you are coming from but “reminds me of McCoy” and “is McCoy” are different. The Packers style of offense doesn’t dictate a need to have a stud running back, we don’t run it enough to warrant drafting one as high as the 2nd. You might say if we had a stud at RB maybe we would run more or our run game would be more effective, but I would disagree with that. We don’t run it often because our pass game is so effective. We haven’t had a season with a healthy Starks and Green yet and I believe that they could potentially make a really good combination. Another thing that made our offense so great was the lack of turnovers, Rodgers protects the ball extremely well as do our running backs. Wilson has been plagued with fumblitis, its obviously something he could work on but the Packers don’t go 15-1 if Grant/Starks put the ball on the ground 7 times like Wilson did. When you say we don’t have a ton of holes you are correct, but the fact is we do have holes, the d-line and an olb. The packers I feel would be better served selecting the best available d-lineman in that position.

I respect your opinion on Branch, like I said I think most others are higher on him than me, its not a pick I would be disappointed with.

I agree on giving Green the opportunity but I can’t see passing on a guy that you may think could be the missing piece in your offense.

McCarthy would thrive with McCoy in his offense. Ryan Grant and Starks aren’t great pass catchers out of the backfield (not terrible, just not great). McCarthy’s brand of the WC is ideal for a back that can threaten the defense vertically. I could see them motioning Wilson all over the formation to get him the ball in space. I think Wilson is Percy Harvin-esque with his pass catching abilities. He’s dynamic in the open field. Agreed on the fumbling issues and is a major concern along with him shouldering the load which he wouldn’t have to in GB.

The Pack is in decent shape with the cap. Finley is going to cost them a chunk of change but at least it’s a TE you’re looking at franchising. I would look at a Luis Castillo type to fill that DE spot and draft an rush LB in the early stages of the draft. The kicker in it all with be Nick Collins health. If he’s not back, you can’t start the season with Peprah again.

I’m working on my DE scouting reports at the moment and I really think Branch could be special. I do like him as a 4-3 end better than standing up.

I didn’t know there was a missing piece to the Packer offense. We were the #1 scoring team in the NFL last year. The Packer offense only struggled in two games and one of them happened to be the playoff game. I think most Packer fans would agree that our offense is just fine. Tag Finley, sign Wells, Cobb gets more opportunity, and younger fresher running backs we should be all set.

Any offense, not just the Packers, would serve well to get a back like Wilson but we don’t exactly need more weapons on our team. Its hard enough for Rodgers to spread the ball around the way it is. Green was brought in to serve as our 3rd down running back, he is extremely capable of catching the ball out of the backfield, he caught 27 balls his last year at hawaii.

We only have about 5 years left of Aaron Rodgers prime and we need to capitalize. I know that Thompson’s draft strategy is BPA but only if it fills a need or a future need. When looking at the 2011 Packers you could tell we missed Cullen Jenkins a lot, Ryan Pickett was largely ineffective and could be a cap casualty, Howard Green is a F.A, Mike Neal didn’t do anything after coming back from injury, Wilson and Wynn are rotational guys only. D-line is not only a need this year its also a future need. It is a position I think the Packers need to address early and often. I don’t mean to abandon all draft strategy to reach for a guy but our defense held us back this season from repeating.

I ultimately trust Ted Thompson but I would be disappointed if the packers didn’t draft at least 2 d-lineman in the first 4 rounds. Also as a packer fan you know that Thompson doesn’t really explore free agency. As great as it sounds to bring in a veteran on the d-line we have too many of our own guys coming up on contract extensions…ie. Rodgers, Raji, Matthews etc.

When your defense was one of the worst in NFL history, the Packers will not waste a 2nd round pick on a RB. With ARod and their great receiving corps they throw the ball and use the run keep the defense somewhat honest. 2nd rounder will be a DE-OT-CB. There are just too many good options still available to take a luxury pick.

    • Anonymous

When your a year removed from winning the SB there’s never a bad time to take a luxury pick. The Pack will evolve as they watch the rest of the NFL evolving. It’s a passing league and the Packers are one of the best at it…but…you need to look at all the advantages you can possibly have. The Giants are a passing team but they run to set up the pass. Against their defense you need to run to set up the pass to keep those DE’s honest. SF is the same way….pound them for a couple here or there and hopefully break one off to keep them honest. You can’t allow teams to tee of on Rodgers because there’s a five-technique in round 2 that you have to have…J.J. Watt won’t be sitting there at the end of round 2, so go out and find one in free agency. This is a team that has to set the standard and can afford to take a risk. The Giants do it every year. Sit and wait and avoid taking a player because you feel like you have to. Your GM is too smart for that and if someone is there that they think could add to the explosiveness of this offense, he’s not going to watch them go by for a five-tech.

According to your Mock Draft of the Giants picks in the first two rounds, you have the G-men selecting Shane Spence (OLB) out of Miami which is a reach. With Talent still on the board according to your draft (such as DeWayne Allen, Vontage Burfict and Whitney Mercilus) How can you project Spence as the Giants first selection, he is rated as the 7th best OLB in the draft and projected by many to go in the mid 2nd round. As for the 2nd round selection of orson charles, he is rated 3rd on the board among TE’S and projected by many to go in the 3rd round. I agree with you that Charles is an excellent receiver, however; his blocking ability is weak and does not fit into the Giants system for TE’s. I think you are reaching big time with these picks and if by some odd chance you are right and the Giants do select Spence and Charles with their first 2 picks. The fans will go absolutely crazy with outrage and boo immensely.

Make a copy of the rankings you are using for reference and let me know how they go in April. I go based on what I see on tape. I will update my rankings after the Combine. I grade Spence higher than Burfict, Allen, and Mercilus. Mercilus is close but I can’t see them spending a pick on another DE….not even the Giants. At some point you can have too much of talent at the same position and DE on the Giants is bordering on it. It’s too early to project trades so Osi is still on their roster. Orson Charles is the top TE on my board. While he wont make a living blocking he’s not as bad as most think. He’s undersized but is so versatile. If I were the Giants and got him with the 64th pick, I would be jacked. Adding him to Nicks and Cruz is not fair. It wouldn’t be the first time fans were upset with a teams draft. I can remember sitting next to a Pats fan at the ’09 draft and him being highly pissed that his team selected Sebastian Vollmer in the 2nd. He turned to me and said “who the hell is that” and I said he wasn’t invited to the Combine and didn’t play in any postseason All Star games but he can play. “Wasn’t invited to the Combine, Bill Belichick is an idiot, waste of a 2nd.” Well that guy has started games at both LT and RT for the New England Patriots. 2010 TJ Ward selection Cleveland Browns fan said “what the hell, who’s that guy, that big USC safety is still available, same old Fing Browns” I said you won’t be disappointed with Ward. He was the 39th player on my board. He said “I don’t care what number player he was on your board. Who the hell are you.” I said just some guy that use to play football that scored a media credential for the draft.

I also had Cam Newton as the 16th best prospect in last years draft, shows what I know. It’s an inexact science and most of the time you rely on your gut. My gut and eyes tell me Sean Spence has the makings of a guy that pisses off 31 GM’s next offseason when they realized they passed on him. Take it all with a grain of salt, especially rankings from internet bums like myself in February. By the time all these guys are done listening to everyone else’s sources they will change 100 times.

Really interesting….but…..I just dont believe so many QBs go so high. Luck and RG3 sure….after that i say second round for Tannehil and weeden. Osweiler in the 3rd. Lions need a CB…if Gilmore is there, they take him, and if not they might take Boykins. Eagles with Cox makes great sense. SF for sure wants a CB. They want a WR too though. Sanu would make sense but i think youre right….but gilmore will be gone. Giants might go LB but it wont be Spence. Sorry man, he’s too small. Same problem for Lavonte David. If they go LB its Ronnell Lewis. But Giants might grab a TE…..i can see Allen falling to them. I dont think Branch goes so high. I know Im in a minority on this….but I still think Brandon Thompson is too good not to go in the first. Giants might even take him, or GB. And Ravens dont really need another wide out. They do need some youth on the offensive line and at LB. Hightower if hes there. If not maybe a brandon washington or Silatolu. Ta’Amu is going high in the second I have a feeling. More I think on it. I predict Burflict drops to the 3rd. I still maintain Irvin in the 2nd….depends what he weighs at the combine. Might be high for chandler jones. I like him, but i dont know if he’s that high. And i do think Mercillus might go in the first. And finally, jared crick might still end up first round but for sure top of the 2nd. I would bet on that. Great reading you as always. I love seeing Schwartz so high. i agree totally — there is no more undervalued player in the whole draft. And Hill…..man, who knows….could he go in the first to a place like the Bears?

    • Anonymous

Trust me, it pained me to put Tannehill that high. But I keep hearing he’s going to go in the top 15. Talent there but needs work. I like Osweiler a lot. I actually have him rated ahead of Tannehill and Weeden. I realize I’m really in the minority on that one but I think he’s got a chance to be special. Don’t see the Lions passing on Konz. CB is a bigger need but Raiola is really showing his age. Mayhew follows his board and I have to think he has Konz ahead of Gilmore.

I’m going to remember you saying Spence was too small. Some guys can just play and he’s one of them. No one on this green earth will talk me out of my love for Spence. Instincts, tackling ability, and athleticism are second to none. He’s the best OLB in this draft for my money. There will be 31 teams pissed they passed on him if he makes it out of round one. Agree on them grabbing a TE at that spot but I don’t think there’s a first round TE in this draft.

I was close on Brandon Washington to BAL but I couldn’t resist the Jeffery pick. Don’t understand people saying they don’t need a WR. Name me one WR (capable of starting) that will be on that roster past the 2012 season not named Torrey Smith. Granted I wouldn’t have went WR there if Hightower or Glenn or any OL of value was there. Ozzie Newsome is not going to reach for someone in the 1st…he’s going BPA and I think it’s a need for the Ravens.

Ta’amu scares the hell out of me. It’s personal preference but I don’t see it. He looked good at the Senior Bowl but downright terrible during the season. I wouldn’t take him before round 3….that’s me and I realize someone probably grabs him in 2.

Excellent call on Hill. He’s a guy that some scouts will fall in love with. If he goes fast at the Combine, he could go ahead of Jeffery and Sanu. Reminiscent of Demaryius Thomas. I don’t think he has that speed but a 4.5 would impress. Great frame, no tape. I may head to GT’s Pro Day just for him.

i have a question. You think cam johnson is an OLB? But not Vinny curry? And do you think chandlar jones can play OLB? And what of Brett Roy>?

All three of them are better 43 ends but all three could play OLB. Curry probably the least likely. So tight in the hips. I don’t know about Roy. He has not made my film study list but he will. From my limited knowledge on him, he’s stuck in the middle and may be a guy w/o a position.

  • Matbash45

I honestly believe this is the most realistic approach for AR and the Eagles… With other glaring needs they’ll always find a way to trick us!
