The college football season officially kicks off on Thursday night with an intriguing game for some top offensive line prospects in the 2012 NFL Draft. Each week of the college season we will preview five games with multiple players on the 2012 NFL Draft Prospect Board.
The kickoff to the season features a fairly lopsided game but will feature some top talent eligible for the 2012 NFL Draft. Wisconsin’s offensive line is packed with NFL prospects with Ricky Wagner, Kevin Zeitler, and Peter Konz. In addition to the offensive line prospects, Wisconsin features a stable of running backs including junior Montee Ball and an intriguing WR in Nick Toon. On the UNLV side of the ball they boast a sleeper candidate in defensive back Will Chandler.
Guys to keep an eye on:
Ricky Wagner, OT, Wisconsin #58
Wagner is our highest rated Wisconsin player at number 63 in our latest rankings. He’s only a junior and could use another season to refine his technique but has an enormous ceiling. Wagner has the size and footwork of a top tackle and once he figures out some of the mechanics of the position he could be a first round tackle in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Kevin Zeitler, OG, Wisconsin #70
Zeitler comes in at number 82 in our latest ranking. He is a true guard prospect that displays solid technique and excellent power. Zeitler is dominant in the run game and is more than capable in pass protection. He is a late second to early third round prospect that is capable of rising into a solid second round prospect.
Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin #66
Konz is not yet ranked due to a lack of film study on him. The junior center is widely considered a top center prospect. Much of this game will be spent watching Konz to come up with a solid grade for Konz. From the games watched on Konz (Ohio State and TCU) he could battle Ben Jones for the spot behind Mike Brewster in the center rankings.
Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin, #28
Ball is only a junior and has shared carries with John Clay and James White at Wisconsin. Ball and White will split carries with Ball probably seeing a few more touches. Ball is surprisingly explosive for guy his size and has the power to break tackles. Ball could sneak into the 2-3 round range with a strong season and declare for the 2012 NFL Draft.
Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin, #1
I have Toon in the 4-5 round range currently but he is capable of rising with a healthy season. He has a significant injury history that could affect his draft position. He is a lanky WR that doesn’t look as fast as he actually is.
Will Chandler, CB, UNLV, #1
Chandler is a late round sleeper for the 2012 NFL Draft. He was a diamond in the rough last season on a bad UNLV team. He’s athletic and has a knack for being around the ball. Chandler is one to watch throughout the season as he’s capable of rising to the 4th round range with another solid season.
