Ron Rivera wanted to give Jimmy Clausen and Cam Newton a chance to take snaps with the first team before deciding on his starting quarterback before week three of the preseason.
Both quarterbacks looked solid in week one but neither did anything to help out their case in week two. Cam struggled to find any rhythm in the first half and couldn’t move the offense at all. Newton played the entire first half and managed three first downs during that period. Newton missed receivers and appeared out of sync with most of his passes. He finished 7-14 for 66 yards in a 20-10 loss to the Dolphins.
The decision will be tough for Rivera as Clausen was equally unimpressive in week two. Clausen finished 9-16 for 69 yards. Newton probably is still the choice but week two sure didn’t help Rivera in his decision making process. As I wrote earlier this week a tie goes to Newton because Carolina drafted him to be their starting quarterback of the present. If Rivera holds true to his word this decision will come this week and we could see a whole lot Cam Newton in week three of the preseason against the Bengals.
